Classroom Expectations
Agendas
Agendas are a very important tool and will be used daily in our classroom to communicate with you and to help maximize student success.Your child is expected to bring it to school each morning, record important information and share it with you each evening. An agenda notice will come home if the agenda is not at school. The use of agendas is a part of the Health and Careers mark.
Reading Program:
Each month your child will bring home a reading calendar to keep track of home reading.Your child is encouraged to read 20 minutes each night and record it on their calendar (see attached for the month of September). Usually this will be a book of their choice but occasionally, it will be an assigned reading. Please sign it at the end of every month and return it to school at the start of the next month for a prize and as part of your child's 'reading for enjoyment' Learning outcome.
Homework
Students may be assigned homework which will generally be work that was not fully
completed during class. Students are expected to do no more than 45 minutes of homework a night. I would ask you to help your child establish good work habits by helping him/her to find a regular time and place to work.
Even if there is no homework assigned, it is always a good idea to have students review concepts or visit relevant math web sites. Please talk to me, or write a note in the agenda, if a concern arises or if your child is doing more than an hour. If homework is not complete a homework notice will come home for a signature. If the assignment
is still not done, students may be kept in during lunch to complete it.
Spelling
Our spelling program will begin in early September. New words will be introduced on Monday and students will 'work' with them all week before being tested on Friday.
Math
There will be weekly Math quizzes that serve to review math concepts taught over the week.They give me an opportunity to see who has mastered and who is struggling with a given concept and re-teach where necessary.They
are NOT used for report card marks, but serve to show the student, parents and myself how well a concept is understood and if more work and review is needed. They will come home every Friday and they are expected to be returned Monday, in their Math Quiz duotang, with a parent intial and corrections done.
Gym
Students are expected to bring a full change of clothes and running shoes that will not leave marks on our gym floor.For safety reasons, a child without proper shoes will not be allowed to participate.Children can bring
their clothes home on Friday and return them the following week to have them washed.
Classroom Expectations
It is expected that students will follow the class rules that we have all agreed upon: show respect to yourself, others and the environment/property. Failure to do so may result in a warning and their name will be moved
from green on our class light to yellow as a warning. Further disrespect will cause their name to move into the red where the student will have to stay in at recess, complete an "In The Red" form which is to be signed and returned to school the next day.Other consequences may include the loss of privileges (such as field trips), loss of free time and /or restitution, depending on the nature of the offense.
Water and Snack
In order to have our brains working at their best, please have your child bring a water-filled water bottle to school each day.They may drink water at their desks throughout the day, which also helps decrease distractions in
going to the water fountain.
Every morning we will have a healthy snack break.At this time students will only be allowed to eat something healthy (fruit, vegetable, crackers and cheese, yogurt, muffin) to give them energy to learn, but prevent the blood sugar crash that happens after eating too much sugar. Pop is never allowed and school.
Report Card Marks
In the intermediate grades (4-6), students receive letter grades for all core subjects and a work habit comment. Letter grades (A, B, C+,C, C-) reflect a student's understanding of concepts taught whereas work habit marks
(G, S, N) reflect attitudes, preparedness, and effort.
Letter grades:
A = Excellent
B = Very Good
C+ = Good
C = Satisfactory
C- = Below Satisfactory
Once again, I am very excited about this year and getting to know and teach your
child.
Thank you for all of the support your give to your child's education,
Mrs. Jennifer Adamson
